96 civic broke down while driving
hey im hoping to get some clues as to what may have happened...i was asleep at the time and this is what my friend said happened:
oil light came on, there was a clicking noise, the engine light came on and the car would not accelerate which is when she pulled over. i woke up there was smoke and it smelled terrible, now it is in my garage and my roommate is having a look at it so i thought maybe someone on here could help point us in the right direction. it seemed really bad and im hoping its not done for.
when they try to start it it doesnt turn over? it makes a highpitched noise. i wish i could explain better but i really dont understand cars.
anyways thanks for your help and sorry if i have explained things poorly.

You're done. Time to get a new engine. I'm going to assume you performed regular maintenance on the car and checked fluids often. Possibly your oil pump went out.

Sounds like it was starved for oil, then driven until the engine stopped running. Your engine is destroyed. You could sell the car or put a new engine in it. If you know someone who can do it, replacing the engine isn't too expensive, but if you have to pay labor the price will be much higher.

yeah we were thinking oil pump im not sure if he has checked that yet. and i was careful about checking fluids but i only bought the car about a month ago and was intending to have my mechanic look it over to see where im starting from but i work too much over the christmas season and well regretting that now for sure.
anyways yeah it had oil.

no point checking in what went wrong, just replace or sell... You can tear down the motor once it's out. In this case, your engine is toast.

You can have it towed and have someone look at but if you take it to a mechanic they'll probably try and charge you upwards of $2-3K to replace that engine. Might want to give these guys a call. http://hmotorsonline.com/shop/

Re: 96 civic broke down while driving
Well i have a reliable mechanic who i spoke with today, he lent me a code reader but there were no codes but at least I know he will not try to screw me. From what i described to him he thought maybe timing belt which I have heard is bad as well. I guess where I get confused is I thought having no oil = seized engine which means the engine wont turn but since the engine does turn and it has oil i thought maybe it was something else.
Anyways I am sorry I imagine you get enough mechanically ignorant people who come here when they have a problem and won't accept bad news I just don't know what to do at this point.

when your friend said he heard a loud clicking noise shows it was the bearings that spun and created a rod knock
i blew my 94 civic 2 weeks ago this way
a code reader shows nothing because this is mechanical damage
where do you live? you can easily craigslist a honda motor to replace your blown one,
