98 ex Misfiring
ok so the car burns a decent amount or oil.
i had to change the spark plugs after 12k miles cause they were so blackened they were misfiring. so i put the new ones in and they are fine for couple days then misfires again. i pulled them to check but they didnt look too dirty. no CEL. i was told it could be the piston rings leaking bad and choking out the plugs. seems to only misfire when in 2nd and 3rd at higher rpms
replacing the piston rings is outta my league and was quoted around $3000 witch blows cause i only paid 2500 for the car 2 years ago.
any ideas on misfire? thanks

Ever get a misfire cel?
What are the miles.
Do a compression check, see if one cyl is down or low.
Might have a bad valve since your burning oil.
3 grand is crazy you can get a rebuilt engine for $1200, then have it installed.
Or get a low mileage swap for say 600 bucks and then have it installed.

i was told it might just be a bad valve by one mechanic, gonna do a compression check tomorow just to see the numbers
gotta friend comin over we are gonna check for spark(i need to get a multimeter). i've never checked fuel injectors before.

$3000? You can get a full ITR swap with tranny included for that price! Also, if your car is burning oil AKA smoking BLUE smoke, a tune WILL NOT fix it because it is engine related and nothing the ECU is capable of fixing. The only way to make your engine stop burning oil is to FIX THE ENGINE.

Re: 98 ex Misfiring
Do the compression check, also do a wet compression check on the low cyl if one comes up low, just squirt some oil in that spark plug hole and redo the test on that cyl, if it is low it is the rings.
I am betting a bad valve, as for not seeing the smoke typically it will be at start up with bad valves. I have the same problem.
BTY if you are getting fouled plugs might be the rings, are the plugs wet or just carbon-ed up?

plugs are dry. cyl 3 is the worst. the 1, 2, and 4 arent too bad
a bad valve would burn as much oil as this does? well those would be much easier to fix than having to replace the whole engine.

Re: 98 ex Misfiring
As mentioned by another member --> COMPRESSION TEST THE CYLINDERS. Do the test after the engine has been warmed up. Then repeat after adding a tablespoon of oil to each cylinder.
Post the numbers (PSI) and go from there.
