Ball joint, how tight should the Castle nut be???
hey sup everyone. Recently all the threads were stripped on my ball joint bolt on the upper arm, the nut slipped off and the tire natuirally got all crazy, nto fun. anyway, after a fun adventure in parts shopping, i got a replacement from Kragen, i know i know but only option for now since i have a camber kit. ANYWAY, my question is this, i got the castle nut on to where it's hand tight, and put the cotter pin in. So how tight is that nut suppose ot be? Super tight? cus if i tighteened it i think liek super tight, the pin won't hold the nut from spinning cus the nut will be too high. I hope thats clear, and hope someone knows btw, scary *** expierence, and now im paranoid it's gonna come off at some random time

Re: (92b16vx)
okay then i have a problem. I put it on, it's tight, but not 30 lbs. u shouldn't be able to spin it, but if i tightened it anymore, the pin won't go through the castle part of the nut. it will go in the pin hole, but not through the nut itself. what shall i do!?
EXAMPLE: WTF this **** is lame, it won't read my spaces when i try and make a design. anyway imagine the pin like5 spaces over, so it's in the center of the nut it's just below it. *** KINDA FIXED IT ***

I I-----I I --------------------Nut
I_I----I_I
----II ---------------------PIN The pin is below the nut

Hahaha... dont' do that! For my 92 civic HB it's 36-40lbs. for the lower control arm one and 32lbs. for the tie-rod one.

The ball jopint under the LCA is, but the upper A arm one is still 29-35lbs-ft.

just tighten it up good... if the holes arent lined up for the cotter pin keep tightening until they line up... never back off of it... put the cotter pin in and be done with it... personally i think pulling out a helms to torque down anything besides the internals on a motor is a waste of time... as long as its good and snug and not overtightened your good to go

well it's fomr kragen, ball joint threads stripped, nut fell off it wa scrazy. anyway i used the castle nut form kragen, i bought another oem honda one so i will try that one and see what happens. I could also try a thicker cotter pin too, so it's a little big bigger so it'll grab.

I've done quite a few ball joints the Honda tech wrote 29 to 35 pounds what you do is go to 29 pounds and see if you can fit the cotter pin through to start if you can't slowly increase it to 35 lb until the slot in the castle nut lines up with the hole in the stud and you can push the cotter pin through because your range is 29 and 35 lb which is 6 lb so you'll be able to move that castle nut enough to get the Cotter pin through I've done a bunch of them you should never over tighten the ball joints you'll screw them up and I am living proof of that because I've made that mistake I used to do with the impact gun you got it to torque all the suspension components you can't just nail them, because you'll kill em, they need to be to specs. Hope that helps good luck with your car. Buy good ball joints they last longer.

This post is old enough to drive, good thing you gave it advice so the castle nut doesn't fall off when it's driving.
