replacing head gasket on 94 legend
well, after having sporatic but reoccuring cooling problems, the source finally reared its ugly head in the form of white smoke out the tailpipe.
i'm pretty mechanically inclined (have built entire engines from a bare block), so i thought i might try this myself. the issue is i've never done any real work on anything but a 4cyl. has anyone here done this and want to offer up some advice, words of encouragement, or words of discouragement?

one suggestion, be carefull with those knock sensors when removing the heads, you tend to hit them with the heads when taking it out. so if i were you i would just remove the sensors first then remove the heads
then install the heads then reinstall the sensor.
ask me how i kow i've broken them

i dunno how you guys work on these cars.....
without a doubt this is the worst car i've ever turned a wrench on. i've never seen so many vacuum lines on a non rotary powered car.
for those of you that have worked on these cars.....is there something attached to the back of the intake manifold that i can't see? i seriously can't tell why it won't come off.

Did you disconnect the PAIR pipe from the PAIR valve on the back of the manifold? (pipe runs from the valve to the driver's side exh. manifold). Also make sure you removed the EGR pipe from the EGR valve mounting bracket to the bottom of the intake manifold.

Re: replacing head gasket on 94 legend (Kenso)
it was the EGR that needed to be disconnected. from the side, it didn't look like the intake manifold was connected to it, but obviously, it was.
i still hate working on this thing. out to the garage i go, heads are coming off this afternoon.
thanks.

nope. i just checked them with a straight edge and feeler guages. they checked out just fine.....so i lucked out a little bit there.
now i'm trying to figure out which knock sensor goes on which cylinder bank. there's a one with a blue wire and one with a gray wire. i'm thinking it probably does make a difference which one goes on which side.
anyone......anyone.....bueller?

Fun isn't it? Red/Blue to the driver's side sensor, white to the pass. side sensor. I posted the schematic from the Helms in your thread on A-L.com if you want to check it out. Here's the pic from when I did my Type II head swap a while back.
