I have a 2004 Honda EX with auto transmission. My issue is a shudder that occurs when accelerating (even gently) between 50-60 miles an hour (roughly 2k – 3K RPM). The shudder stops if I take my foot off the gas. It also stops when the car shifts into the next gear at about 60 mph. It does not occur when ‘coasting’ (not accelerating) in that speed range. The shudder does not occur in that RPM range at other speeds or in other gears. It does not feel like the engine is stumbling or losing power, but it is a bit disconcerting. The Honda mechanics drove the car and experienced the problem but don’t have an answer. Per the mechanics, the transmission checked out okay and there were no suspect diagnostic codes. Tires were balanced and rotated – several times—without resolving the problem.
I’ve seen similar issues discussed with older Accord models, with suggestions of O2 sensors, throttle position sensor, clogged EGR ports, CV joints and axles. Not sure if any of the above apply here or how to check. Ideas?

Has it had a tuneup?

It seems like a spark/gas/combustion issue. Find another mechanic. Any CEL? It could be oil in the plug tubs. Is it misfiring?

Thanks for the reply. The car is current with all scheduled maintenance (by the dealer) and runs well other than this specific event under these specific conditions. No CEL or other diagnostic errors noted.

You will likely find galling on the inner cv joint in one or both axles. Based on your symptom description and my experience...
