Clean rotor before install?
A guys i was reading a magazine the other day. And they were doing a big brake upgrade on a civic, and before installing the new brake pads and rotors. The guy was washing the rotors with a scotchbrite pad and some soap.
I think they said it would help the pad and rotor perform better.??
Thats crazy anyone ever heard of this???????

You have to wash off the coating that is usually found on new rotors. If you don't, there'll be a bad smell when you burn it off braking. I usually use brake cleaner and a rag, since they were using soap maybe they were also trying to wash away any grease or grime they might have gotten on the rotor during the install.

It won't neccesarily perform better. Rotors usually come with a coating on the to prevent rust/etc while sitting on the shelf. You need to clean it off before installing.

Re: (boosh)
ive heard of people surfacing BRAND NEW rotors right out the of box.. to prevent the chance of warping in shipping. that would also get all the preservitive additives..
but ive heard now adays.. shipping standards are alot better, and its not somethign to worry about.. but i still hit it with alittle sandpaper.. its just me.

Re: (travis)
most rotors, well the good ones come machined from factory...u clean em with brake cleaner after u install em to get any grease/oil off them that would create hot spots and in turn promote warping.
if u buy cheaper rotors that arent machined from factory just go over them with some fine sandpaper/scotchbrite pad then clean with brake cleaner then finish assebly like normal
